![]() | Friday, 19 January, 2001, 13:55 GMT Spackman makes his move ![]() Hayward New Barnsley boss Nigel Spackman has confirmed the signings of Bradford striker Isaiah Rankin and Fulham midfielder Steve Hayward. Hayward signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Tykes for an undisclosed fee after completing a medical this morning. He left Craven Cottage after falling out of favour with new manager Jean Tigana and was slightly bitter that the club insisted on a fee, even those his contract expired in the summer. "I'm 29 so need to be playing regularly - so when a club like Barnsley comes in for you it helps you to make your mind up," said Hayward.
Former Arsenal front man Rankin, who also had spells with Birmingham and Bolton last year, will cost 350,000, rising to 600,000 depending on appearances. "I've joined Barnsley because it's a chance to play," he said. "No one is guaranteed first-team football, but it's a change of scenery for me. "I was not getting a look-in at Bradford, so I had to look at other options and chose Barnsley. Both men are expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday's Division One game at Burnley. | See also: Other top Eng Div 1 stories: Links to top Eng Div 1 stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
