Stafford, needing a win for survival, were relegated in comprehensive style by four second-half York strikes.
York were always the better side and took a deserved lead after 53 minutes.
Martyn Woolford took a pass from Onome Sodje and blasted home from 20 yards. Within five minutes, Richard Brodie's 12-yard finish doubled the lead.
Stuart Elliott made it 3-0 with a superb strike from 30 yards after 77 minutes and Mark Robinson's cool finish in injury time completed York's win.
