Barry Town will face Macedonian opposition in the Champions League first qualifying round

The Welsh Premier champions were one of 10 unseeded sides in the draw on Friday and were pulled out of the hat along with FK Vardar, with home and away matches against the side from the former Yugoslav Republic.

The first leg will be played in the Macedonian capital Skopje on Wednesday 16 July at the City Stadium, with the return in Barry a week later.

Vardar won the Yugoslavian title in 1985/86 - the only Macedonian club to win the league.

They have won the Macedonian championship for the second succesive season, claiming their fifth title since the formation of the league.

Despite that, their manager Gjoko Hadziveski resigned, stating a desire to work abroad, with former FK Cementarnica 55 coach Zoran Stratev taking over.

Last season Vardar beat F'91 Dudelange of Luxembourg in the first qualifying round of the Champions League, before losing to Legia Warsaw of Poland in the second.

Should Barry win through to the second qualifying round, their reward will be a tough test against the Russian champions.

The Russian league is still in progress, but CSKA Moscow have a comfortable five-point lead.

A draw against Bohemians would have produced an exciting Celtic derby for both sets of fans, but it wasn't to be as the Republic of Ireland side face Bate Borisov.

Of the other British sides, Glentoran play HJK Helsinki, while Scottish giants Celtic - who were in the draw for the second qualifying round - will face either HV Tourshavn or Kaunus.

The other seeded sides in the first qualifying round draw were: HJK Helsinki (Finland), Skonto Riga (Latvia), Omonia Nicosia (Cyprus), Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia), Leotar Trabinje (Bosnia-Herzegovina), FBK Kaunas (Lithuania), KR Reykjavik (Iceland) and FC Sherif (Moldova).

The draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland.
