Lua Lua (left) tussles with Vieri |
Uefa has cleared Inter Milan striker Christian Vieri of making racist comments towards Newcastle's Lomana LuaLua in the Champions League game between the sides on 11 March. LuaLua alleged the Italian international had racially abused him and the match referee subsequently reported the incident to the game's European governing body.
But Uefa's Control and Disciplinary Body announced there was no case to answer.
Newcastle made an official complaint to Uefa after the 2-2 draw, but Vieri always denied the allegations.
"I am upset about this. Whoever knows me knows what type of a person I am," he said when the allegations first broke.
"It's absolutely untrue. When you are on the field so many things happen and so many words are spoken, but not this kind of thing of which I am accused."
Vieri confirmed the two had exchanged insults but denied they were of a racial nature.
"It's true I insulted him but with normal words that you use during a match, not racist."
The disciplinary case opened against Inter for the improper conduct of their supporters in the same game will be dealt with at a later date.
Racist abuse of black players has been a big problem in Italian football.
Inter were fined two years ago and forced to play away from the San Siro after crowd trouble following their Uefa Cup exit at the hands of Spanish club Alaves.
