![]() | Barthez blunders cost Man Utd ![]() Diego Tristan celebrates Deportivo's winner Manchester United 2-3 Deportivo La Coruna Fabien Barthez had a night to forget as Deportivo La Coruna completed a Champions League double over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday. United's keeper gifted the Spanish side a goal in each half to leave Sir Alex Ferguson's team reflecting on yet another uncertain defensive display. Victory leaves Deportivo top of the group and they fully deserved their win after Ruud van Nistelrooy had put the home side in front with his first goal in Europe for his new club. Andy Cole missed a glorious chance to snatch a point late in the game when heading wide a Ryan Giggs cross, but it is at the back where Ferguson has real problems.
Giggs created the chance with a dazzling run, before sliding the ball through to his Dutch team-mate, who poked the ball past Jose Molina, But United were forced to make a change with Wes Brown replacing Ronny Johnsen, who was injured in a tackle, and the visitors wasted no time in testing out Ferguson's reshuffled defence. Amavisca's curling effort dipped just wide of Barthez's right-hand post and an Aldo Duscher drive from 25 yards was well tipped over by the United keeper. Not to be outdone, United almost doubled their lead when Giggs burst down to left and fired in a low cross for Van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman made contact at full stretch only to balloon the ball over the bar.
Deportivo continued to look dangerous, although the Spanish side would not have expected to be handed an equaliser by their opponents. Brown looked to have cleared any danger when dispossessing Sergio as he bore down on goal but the United defender and Barthez both let the ball run loose and Sergio stole in for the simplest of tap-ins. A minute later Deportivo were ahead when Tristan rose unmarked in the area to head home a Pedro Duscher cross. The Old Trafford crowd fell silent but within two minutes United were level. Van Nistelrooy was played in by a ball that flicked off Beckham's heel and the Dutchman finished with an exquisite chip over Molina from the tightest of angles. Barthez looked to have regained his composure with a stunning diving save to keep out Valeron's drive three minutes after the interval. But any hopes Ferguson had of regaining the lead disappeared on the hour when the Frenchman came sliding out of his area only to miss the ball allowing Tristan a clear shot at goal. The introduction of Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer failed to force a draw and United know they need to improve for the visit of Olympiakos next week.
