Esperance go to the top
Esperance and Tunisia national goalkeeper, Chokri El Ouaer
Esperance's El Ouaer is heading towards another title
Esperance Sportive de Tunis have moved closer to the defence of their title after beating their arch-rivals Club Africain 2-1 at a crucial stage in the season.

But they had to come from a goal down at the newly built Olympic Stadium outside the capital to win the match.

And it was an own goal by Club Africain defender, Chokri Zaalani in the 47th minute which gave Esperance all three points.

  Title contenders
1=. Esperance P16 Pts30
1=. Etoile du Sahel P16 Pts30
3. Club Africain P17 Pts29
4. Sfaxien P16 Pts 25
Zaalani conceded the own goal after being pressed by Esperance striker Sami Laaroussi.

The victory has put Esperance equal on 30 points with the leaders Etoile Sahel.

Africain's advantage

However, they have a goal difference four better than Etoile.

This was the big chance for Club Africain to make a real bid for the title.

But now, a point down and having played an extra game, their hopes are fading.

At one stage it was looking good though.

Club Africain took the lead after 15 minutes through Ivorian international midfielder, Sidi Badara Aliou.

But Esperance quickly revived themselves and equalized through Mourad Melki following some lovely teamwork.

Despite all the hype before the match the performance of both sides was below par, and something of a disappointment for the 60,000 spectators.

It was often scrappy in midfield and finishing was poor.

It continues Club Africain's poor record - they have not beaten Esperance since October 1997.

In the last clash this season at the El Menzah Stadium, Esperance won 3-0.
