Nigeria sack Shaibu
Amodu Shaibu would have been the first indigenous African to take a team to the World Cup
Shaibu steered Nigeria to bronze in the Nations Cup
Nigeria have sacked coach Amodu Shaibu ahead of the World Cup in Korea and Japan.

The Nigerian sports ministry said Shaibu's chaotic handling of the team at the recent African Cup of Nations is the reason for his dismissal.

Constant bickerings over money and meaningless confrontations during the tournament were also cited.

The Super Eagles made a semi-final exit from the competition - losing 2-1 to Senegal.

The Nigerians eventually won bronze, beating host nation Mali.

It makes him the second Nations Cup coaching casualty following the recent sacking of Togo's Tchanile Bana.

Shaibu, 42, took charge of Nigeria 10 months ago from his boss Dutchman Jo Bonfrere.

Replacement

The Nigerian had immediate success by steering them to a third successive World Cup finals.

It was his second spell in charge after leading the side from 1994 to 1997.

But he lost the job after a highly-publicised row with the sports minister at the time.

Shaibu would have been the first Nigerian to lead his nation to the World Cup.

Nigeria are drawn with Argentina, England and Sweden in the first round group matches at the World Cup.

The sports ministry said Festus Onigbinde, head of the Nigerian FA technical department, is to replace Shaibu.

Onigbinde was Super Eagles coach between 1982 and 1984.

He took them to the '84 Nations Cup, where they lost 3-1 to Cameroon in the final.
