"Very dark" future for Egypt - El Gohary
Mahmoud El Gohary
El Gohary is not much of an optimist
BBC Sport Online's Amr Shaheen

Egypt coach Mahmoud El Gohary has strongly criticised the state of football in his country.

In an interview with the BBC, the Pharaohs' coach said that the future of Egyptian soccer was "very dark."

I am not satisfied with anything in the Egyptian football field
Mahmoud El Gohary
"Preparing a good generation of any profession needs a long time, it has to start with children. We should have intensive training for all ages, which is not the case in Egypt," he said.

"I am not satisfied with anything in the Egyptian football field."

And he specifically attacked the perception of football as a sport in Egypt.

"We should be dealing with this issue in a scientific professional way, but unfortunately, people here look at football as a hobby for kids to do in their past-times," he stated.

"The current system is organized in a very old-fashioned manner, it is run by people who have nothing to do with football."

He was also critical of the new generation of players, describing them as "not determined" and "pampered."

"The new younger football players now want to have everything as soon as possible. They don't want to make much effort; they want things the easy way."

But he conceded that this was a consequence of the modern world as whole.

"This is happening everywhere not just in Egypt, you can see that in Italy and Spain for example and these are the best football schools in the world. This is a problem of the current generation as a whole in all fields, not just football."
