Asec conquer Lazio
Asec team
Asec were too good for a depleted Lazio side
Ivorian champions Asec Abidjan stunned Italian giants Lazio 3-1 on Monday night to win the second Shalom (Peace) Cup, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The three-team competition, involving Lazio, Asec and Israeli outfit Maccabi Haifa was planned by Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti as the latest in a series of measures to disassociate the club with racist and anti-semitic supporters.

Three matches were played, each lasting 45 minutes, with the clock stopping each time that the ball wasn't in play.

In the first game Lazio thrashed Maccabi 4-0, scoring three goals in the first half.

Goals came from Simone Inzaghi, Emanuele Berrettoni, Brazilian Cesar from the penalty spot and former Spanish international Ivan De La Pena.

In the second game Asec played Maccabi, beating the Israeli champions 1-0 thanks to a penalty by Seydou Kante.

In the deciding match, Lazio were surprised by the vivacity of the Mimosas youngsters and Kone Bakari opened the scoring with a stunning volley from 16 yards.

In the second mini-half Beugre Ahiba managed to find the net after a scramble in the box to put Asec 2-0 up.

In the last two minutes Lazio opened their account from a Fernando Couto header, but from the restart Togoloese international Kossi Noutsoudje sealed it for the visiting side.

Afterwards Dino Zoff hailed the success of the tournament.

"I am happy and satisfied how the public has reacted to the call," said Cragnotti.

"This evening has given a sign of civility and as far as Lazio is concerned our fight against racism and anti-semitism continues. Some may have tried to boycott us but in general the message has been received by all and I am proud of that."

RESULTS: Lazio - Maccabi Haifa 4-0
ASEC Mimosas - Maccabi Haifa 1-0
Lazio - ASEC Mimosas 1-3
