![]() | Thursday, 30 August, 2001, 14:09 GMT 15:09 UK Kenya FA in crisis ![]() The magic has certainly ended for Kenyan fans The Kenya Football Federation (KFF) has suspended indefinitely its treasurer Levi Obondo and a committee has been appointed to probe the federation's finances. Mr Obondo's suspension comes after the Sports Ministry warned the KFF it had to respond to mismanagement allegations against it or face the consequences. Sports Minister Francis Nyenze said the main areas of concern to the Government were the disappearance of money raised from the gates, the sale of television rights for international games and the transfer of Kenyan players abroad. The newly-appointed committee has been given three weeks to present its findings to the KFF governing council.
It is the second suspension of a KFF executive committee member in a month. Deputy Secretary Dan Murunga was sidelined after he was accused of being directly involved in the controversial transfer of three players from Nairobi's Mathare United's football academy to Egyptian club Ismailia. After Mr Obondo's suspension, Mr Murunga, called on the Government to dissolve the federation and hold fresh elections. He is quoted in the East African Standard newspaper as saying: "It is time we all went back to the electorate to seek a fresh mandate." Mr Murunga said the minister's intervention was long overdue. Bob Munro, chairman of Kenyas Premier League club Mathare United, also supports the governments move. In a statement he said: "The misappropriated and stolen KFF funds do not belong to the KFF. Those funds belong to the thousands of players and their families who depend on football for their livelihood". "They have suffered because of the incompetence and greed of senior KFF officials". Earlier this month Mr Munro wrote to Fifa asking football's world governing body to cancel the contracts of his three players transferred to Ismailia without his consent. | See also: Other top Africa stories: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
