Enyimba clinch super league title
Enyimba FC are Nigeria's 2001 league champions after winning the Super League series contested by four clubs.

The Aba-based club won all their three matches to earn nine points in the tournament and claim the title.

Sixteen division one teams played in the main league competition and the top four, Rangers, Enyimba, Gombe United and NPA, qualified for the Super League which was played on a round-robin basis in Lagos.

NPA from mid-western Warri city came second with four points, while Gombe and Rangers followed with three points and one respectively.

Winning the Nigerian league title overall is a victory for hard work. And we intend to win the African Champions League next season
State governor Uzor Kalu

It was a disappointing performance for Rangers, trained by ex-Super Eagles captain and assistant coach Christian Chukwu, after the club had finished top of the main league competition.

Each member of Enyimba's 27-man squad will be rewarded with a brand-new Peugeot 504 car, according to their soccer-mad state governor Uzor Kalu

Kalu added that club trainer Godwin Uwua will not take part in a coaching attachment course with English Premiership side Arsenal.

Uwua, who led central Makurdi town club Lobi Stars to a Super League title win in 1999, becomes the first coach to do a rare double with two different sides.

Kalu said: "Winning the Nigerian league title overall is a victory for hard work. And we intend to win the African Champions League next season."

Enyimba's title victory means they will be Nigeria's representative in next season's Champions League tournament.

Julius Berger have already qualified for the league phase of this year's tournament and are aiming to be the first club to win the trophy for Nigeria.

NPA will play in the CAF Cup next year while Sunshine Stars, who beat Kano Pillars on penalties in the Division Two play-off, will play in the West African Union Cup.

All teams that played in the Super League got cash rewards of between $1,500 and $30,000 from the tournament sponsors, soft drink makers Pepsi.
