Fortune favours first-team place

Manchester United and South Africa midfielder Quinton Fortune tells BBC Sport Online's Mohammed Allie about his plans to leave Old Trafford.

Just one year after being voted Manchester United's young player of the year, South African international midfielder Quinton Fortune has been placed on the transfer list by the English Premiership champions.

Concerned by his lack of action in United's league campaign, Fortune decided to approach manager Alex Ferguson to find out whether he still figured in the team's plans for the new season.

"I'm 24-years-old and not getting younger. To improve my game I need to play regularly at the highest level, which in England is the Premiership.

"When I asked Alex about my future with the club he was very honest with me - he told me I wouldn't play as regularly as I would like to because I was challenging Ryan Giggs who is a great player," said Fortune.

While admitting it would be hard to leave a great club like United, Fortune said the need to play regular top-league football was much more important to him.

"Ever since I came to England as a 14-year-old when I joined the Tottenham Hotspur youth team, I've been dying to play in the Premier League.

"Not playing regularly at United means that my football career is stagnating," said Fortune.

International commitments

Although he is desperate for action, the Bafana Bafana midfielder said he is keen to remain in England. "I've been very happy here and of course, it would be great if I could join another English club."

While some British newspapers have speculated that Tottenham Hotspur may be interested in his services, Fortune says he has only had contact with Italian Serie A club Bologna.

"To be honest, I'm willing to play anywhere, just as long as I play regularly."

Fortune believes his continued absence from United due to international commitments with the South African national side may have played a role in his failure to establish himself at the Old Trafford club.

"At the start of last season I did quite well by scoring two goals at the World Club Championships in Brazil but soon afterwards I had to go off to the African Cup of Nations finals in Ghana and Nigeria.

"Then there were also other international commitments like the Olympic Games and other qualifying matches which took me away from the club quite often.

"But I also have a commitment to my country so unfortunately that's just the way things are," he lamented.

Fortune still has two years left of his five-year contract with United and if no offers come along in the meantime, he is due back at the club on 9 July to resume pre-season training.
