![]() | Gambia back on side ![]() Dakar Stadium - where WAFU will hold the finals of its 2001 Regional Championship Aka Malan, the general-secretary of the West African Football Union, says Gambia has renewed its membership of WAFU. Malan was in Gambia on Saturday for talks with the FA, which has harboured a major grudge against WAFU since the last-minute cancellation of a match last month. WAFU called off the qualifier for its regional championship between Gambia and Burkina Faso, which was scheduled to be played in Banjul on April 8, the day before the game was due to kick off.
Financial losses But the Gambian FA reacted furiously, complaining that it had incurred big losses after organising the game and accused WAFU of incompetence. The GFA's secretary-general Jammeh Bojang said they could no longer work with Wafu and pulled the country out. However, following discussions with the GFA on Saturday, Aka Malan said the matter has been resolved and a re-match would be held on a date yet to be decided. "It was all a matter of misunderstanding - the game was postponed because of flight difficulties for Burkina Faso," the WAFU boss said. Bojang confirmed the change of heart. Bad start "After going through the documentary evidence and reasons advanced by Aka, we are now convinced the matter was a simple misunderstanding and we are going back," he told the BBC. The incident in April got the new regional competition off to a bad start.
Asked why WAFU has been behind the other football bodies on the continent, Aka Malan blamed a lack of sponsorship. "Without money, we simply didn't have the wherewithal to stage a successful competition," he said. Prize money However, he said their problems were now a thing of the past. "We have now secured a six-year contract to set us on the same course as our peers". WAFU is guaranteeing thousands of dollars in prize money at the finals of the regional championship, which are due to be held in Dakar. The winners will receive $30,000, the runners-up $20,000, while even teams which lose out in the qualifying stage will get $5,000 for their trouble.
