The 55-year-old Manuel currently coaches Portuguese first division side Uniao Leiria. He has previously managed the current Portuguese league leaders Boavista, and also managed Benfica.
He would be on a $22,000 monthly salary. "I am really flattered to have been appointed coach of the side that was regarded as the African team of the century," Silva said. "I have always wanted to coach abroad and this is a great opportunity," he added. The new manager's main task will be to clinch the African Champions League trophy for Al Ahly. The club has failed to make the finals of that competition despite competing in the last two editions. They are in this year's edition and have already made it into the last 16, one round before the group stages Al Ahly were ranked as Africa's team of the century by the Confederation of African Football after winning the Champions Cup three times and the Cup Winners Cup four times. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Africa stories: Links to top Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
