![]() | Kuffour furious over Bayern fine ![]() Kuffour (r) in Champions League action A 3,100 club fine for supposedly discussing a move to Spanish giants Barcelona has further damaged relations between Ghana's Sammy Kuffour and his German club Bayern Munich. Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness said Kuffour, who still has 18 months to run on his contract, was fined after being seen in a Munich restaurant having lunch with Barcelona director Bernd Schuster. But the player told Bild newspaper: "I am not a slave. Having lunch after practice is my right - no matter with whom and where. "Besides, Hoeness doesn't even know what we talked about. He wasn't there, he only heard it from others." Hoeness also had angry words for Barcelona president Joan Gaspart, who does not seem to have given up after having an official offer rejected in January. "We fined Kuffour in an attempt to make him see reason," said Hoeness.
Fifa rules say clubs can only negotiate with players who have less than six months on their contracts. Kuffour is already awaiting possible action following his assault on a referee after Ghana's World Cup qualifying defeat in Sudan at the end of last month. The defender also strongly criticised some of his Black Stars' team-mates for using 'juju' or magic rituals before the match. Double salary offer Kuffour missed Bayern's first win in four league games at the weekend, but was seen having a meal with Schuster, a former midfielder with the Catalan club and Germany.
Although only 24, Kuffour already holds the record for the number of Champions League games played by an African and helped Bayern to the 1999 final where they came within seconds of beating Manchester United before losing 2-1. Bayern vice-president Karl-Heinz Rumenigge said they thought about Barcelona's January offer "for all of five minutes" but the player seems a lot more keen. Kuffour had said earlier: "Bayern told me from the start about Barcelona's interest and I have asked them to think about it carefully and consider the possibility. "I am very happy in Munich but I have a special relationship with Barcelona. I have a lot of good memories from the Olympic Games there in 1992." Kuffour joined Bayern's youth team in 1993 as a 17-year-old and has been with the club since apart form a loan spell at Nuremburg. | See also: Other top Africa stories: Links to top Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
