Kenya fail to please Fabisch
kenya 92 team
Kenya are hoping to emulate their 1992 team which reached the Nations Cup finals
Kenya started their preparations for a key African Nations Cup qualifier later this month by beating neighbours Uganda 1-0 in Mumias on Saturday.

But it took a late penalty by Eric Omondi to separate the two sides and left coach Reinhard Fabisch unimpressed with the performance of the Harambee Stars.

Fabisch said he expected to make at least five changes before leaving for Gabon, where Kenya must win in Libreville on March 25.

Kenya are expected to travel via Johannesburg and might meet Bafana Bafana in a friendly international next week, although no details have yet been finalised.

Saturday's match was watched by a healthy crowd of 10,000 in the western Kenyan town with Uganda's team arriving after an eight-hour bus journey just minutes before kick off.

Both sides had several chances in the first half but Uganda's goalkeeper Sam Kawalya was the busiest of the two custodians.

Hollow win

The goal came when Robert Mambo was allegedly brought down by defender Timothy Batabaire in the Ugandan penalty area and referee Paul Kuwanda pointed to the spot.

Giant midfielder Omondi converted the kick in the 78th minute for a hollow win against an experimental Ugandan side.

Uganda meet Senegal in their next Nations Cup qualifier in Dakar on March 25 and were due to play top club side SC Villa and then Rwanda this week.

However, they did not seem to have a good journey home, with reports suggesting the Ugandans had to borrow money from a hotel manager to pay for their petrol.

They were due to receive a share of the gate receipts as well as full accommodation and transport costs for playing but Kenyan officials did not hand over the money.
