League One strugglers Walsall were knocked out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in the first round 5-4 on penalties by League Two Bury.
Walsall's Sam Parkin struck a post in the shoot-out with the away side netting all five of their efforts.
In normal time, Walsall's on-loan defender Clayton McDonald saw a shot narrowly deflected over the bar.
Jordan Robertson missed Bury's best chance, firing wide after skipping through the home defence.
