Ian Sharps was the hero for Rotherham who edged out neighbours Mansfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. The big central defender buried a header from Stephen Brogan's free-kick shortly after the restart.
Stags keeper Carl Muggleton was twice called on to perform heroics with saves from Derek Holmes and Marc Newsham.
At the other end Andy Warrington only had a Jake Buxton header to deal with, while Danny Sleath whistled a drive just over the bar from 30 yards.
