![]() | Thursday, 24 January, 2002, 15:07 GMT FAW target Euro club final ![]() The Millennium Stadium has hosted big games The Football Association of Wales will target staging a major European club competition after failing to be included in the bid to co-host the 2008 European Championship. Scotland have joined forces with the Republic of Ireland to launch a campaign, leaving Wales - who were initially mentioned - out in the cold. David Collins, the FAW secretary-general said Wales weren't helped by just having one stadium that met Uefa's 20,000-capacity guidelines. "Scotland were looking for a country that could offer two stadia. We only have the Millennium Stadium. "The Morfa Stadium project and the new home for Cardiff City have yet to get beyond proposal stages. Strong partners "Three countries trying to co-host would present Uefa with a problem. "That said, it is disappointing to be left out. Our most realistic hope now is to try and stage a big European final in Wales." Andy Mitchell, of the Scottish Football Association, said: "There is no one factor why we chose to go with Ireland. "But taking into account the geography, economic circumstances and the number of stadia, we made that decision. "Wales would have made strong partners, but I think the FAW understand our position." | See also: Other top Football stories: Links to more Football stories are at the foot of the page. | ||
