Discussions have been held between the governing bodies on both sides of the border about reviving the world's oldest international fixture.

But the Scottish Football Association insist that the final decision on whether they pursue the scheme will be left to Craig Brown's successor.

SFA chief executive David Taylor and his Scottish-born English counterpart, Adam Crozier, are enthusiastic about the possibility.

But, if Scotland's new coach sees the match as beneficial to his plans, action could be stepped up to set a date - possibly early next season - for the first Auld Enemy meeting since the Euro 2000 play-offs at Hampden Park and Wembley.

SFA spokesman Andy Mitchell said: "The chief executive and the chief executive of the English FA have expressed a desire to play the game at some stage in the future.

"It's a matter of getting the opportunity, but we are not planning any until we appoint a new coach and the Hampden pitch is also being relaid.

"The new Scotland coach, whoever that may be, will decide if they want to bring back the fixture.

Progress being made

"But David Taylor and Adam Crozier have gone on record as saying that they would like to play the game again."

England-Scotland games were an annual event until 1989.

The SFA also revealed that progress is being made on their search for the next Scotland coach.

Former Germany coach Berti Vogts, who is currently in charge of the Kuwait national side, is the SFA's main target, while former Parma manager Nevio Scala and Frenchman Philippe Troussier are also in the frame.

"Yes, there is always progress, but we cannot quantify that at this minute," Mitchell admitted.
