In the true spirit of games between the two countries, Sunday's European under-16 championship quarter-final went the way of spotkicks. After the game had ended 1-1 - Cherno Samba's suspiciously offside opener cancelled out by Germany's Alexandrer Laas - most of the 4,000 crowd at Middlesbrough's Riverside stadium feared the worst. After all, Germany had a history of breaking English hearts in shoot-outs, first at Italia 90 when Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce missed, then when Gareth Southgate blew it at Euro 96.
The game itself was typically competitive, with Germany pressing for a winner after drawing level and England missing a gilt-edged chance in the final minute. Afterwards, England coach Dick Bate revealed that his team had practised penalties the day before the game. And the move paid off as Justin Hoyte converted the decisive kick to send the hosts into the semi-finals for only the second time. Standing between England and a place in the final are either France or Russia, who meet on Monday night. "We've now gone beyond our expectations and have shown we can rise to the big occasion," said Bate. | Other top Football stories: Links to top Football stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
