Barnes hoping for second chance

Former Celtic boss John Barnes says he is willing to start from scratch in an attempt to kick-start his management career.

The former England and Liverpool star left Parkhead last season after a run of poor results, culminating in the Scottish Cup defeat against minnows Inverness Caledonian coupled with a player revolt.

I would be very keen to get back into the game if I can

But now Barnes is ready to join close friends Jan Molby and Nigel Clough in the lower divisions.

"I have not had the luxury of turning down job offers, but I do miss football management and I would be very keen to get back into the game if I can," Barnes said.

"I don't know exactly how low I would go, but if a Second or Third Division club had ambition, prospects and the possibility of success, I would think of joining them."

Speaking at the launch of a new 'Kick It Out' and Professional Footballers' Association anti-racism campaign, Barnes admitted his time at Celtic was hindered by the perception that he did not have the experience to succeed.

He said: "Sometimes people don't do what you want them to do on the pitch. You have to ask yourself 'Why?'

"Is it because they think I don't have enough experience or knowledge or that I've never done it myself?

"It is difficult for me to know exactly who thought what, but we all have prejudices. That is human nature and I think it was very difficult for me to be accepted at Celtic.

Barnes warned new England coach Sven Goran Eriksson that there were people already waiting to shoot him down if he does not produce instant results.

"If Eriksson brings success I don't think it matters where he is from," he said.

"But if not he will probably be treated more harshly than if he was English."
