Leeds Rhinos have won the 2008 Team of the Year and Coach of the Year awards at the BBC Yorkshire Sports Awards. The Rhinos, coached by Brian McClennan, had a year to savour, winning the World Club Challenge and successfully defending their Super League title. Rhinos centre Keith Senior said: "It's a great acknowledgement for everything we've worked hard for all year round." Former GB international and Wakefield coach David Topliss was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame. He died suddenly in June aged 58 after collapsing during a five-a-side match - and there was recognition at the awards ceremony for the rugby league legend. Former Great Britain international Topliss captained both Wakefield and Hull in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley. His seven years in charge of Wakefield between 1987 and 1994 followed a 13-year playing career with the club. He won the Lance Todd Trophy as Man of the Match in their last cup final appearance in 1979.

But it was Leeds' night as they celebrated their pair of trophies. Senior told BBC Radio Leeds: "To be acknowledged for getting team of the year shows that we've put a lot of hard work and commitment into the season." Under McClennan's leadership, Leeds beat Melbourne Storm 11-4 in the World Club Challenge at Elland Road and upset the odds by beating St Helens in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. It capped a remarkable first season in charge for McClennan, who was quick to share the honours with his players and backroom staff. "I'm always honest to them and we have an open environment where there's an open door policy and they can come in and put their thoughts," said the Kiwi. "It's their team and it's our team - we set our goals together, we've set game plans together and we've got a lot of trust in one another." Stone won double Paralympic Gold in Beijing in September |
Other winners on the night included Dewsbury's Matthew Johnson, who won the Sport England award for junior boys. The 13-year-old swimmer has won 26 national titles in just three years. Danielle Brown from Lothersdale took the Sport England senior female award for her Paralympic gold in the archery in Beijing, while Leeds double Paralympic cycling champion David Stone, who won gold both in the mixed individual road race and the individual time trial in the CP2 category, took the Disabled Athlete award. Wakefield Hockey Club's under-15 girls were the Sport England junior team of the year after becoming the first side from the North of England to win an England Hockey National Cup at Under-15 level.
