Britons miss out on Rome medals

Nicholas Robinson-Baker and Benjamin Swain
The British duo had qualified for the final in third place

British duo Nicholas Robinson-Baker and Benjamin Swain missed out on medals in the men's 3m synchronized final at the World Championships in Rome.

The Sheffield duo qualified in third place and were tied in fourth spot after the first dive of the final.

But they were out of synch in the last-but-one dive, earning low marks which saw them drop to seventh as the medals went to China, the USA and Canada.

Earlier, Tonia Couch came eighth in the women's 10m platform competition.

It was a massive improvement on the Plymouth diver's two previous appearances at the World Championships, where she finished 25th both times.

The event was surprisingly won by Mexico's Olympic bronze medallist Paola Espinosa, ahead of China's Olympic champion Ruolin Chen, with Kang Li in third.

The Chinese team had been hoping to make a clean sweep of the gold medals, having won nine out of 10 at the last World Championships two years ago.
