A fifty from Charlotte Edwards could not prevent England losing to Australia by 33 runs under the D/L method in the opening women's one-day international. Australia chose to bat in Perth but rain cut the innings to 44 overs, Alex Blackwell hitting 42 in their 194-7. England lost both openers within three overs with only five on the board before Edwards hit her 34th ODI fifty. Rain returned to end the match with England on 151-9 in the 40th over. The second ODI is on Friday, also in Perth. Having lost the toss at the famous Western Australia Cricket Association ground, England bowlers Katherine Brunt and Laura Marsh conceded only 20 runs in the opening six overs. But powerful Aussie skipper Blackwell shared 77 with Leah Polton until the latter was caught at deep mid-wicket by Lydia Greenway in the 34th over.  | This was just one game where we've not performed to our best, but we will train hard and come back fighting on Friday |
The quick hands of Lauren Griffiths led to the stumping of Blackwell off the spin bowling of Edwards, but the Australians added 37 from the final five overs. After the early wickets of openers Heather Knight and Danni Wyatt, Edwards shared 66 with Laura Greenway, whose innings of 26 was ended in the 21st over when she was lbw to Lisa Sthalekar. The captain was caught at mid-wicket in the 34th over and when the rain had the final say, England were short of the required target of 185. "I'm disappointed," Edwards lamented. "We had a bad day at the office. We bowled reasonably well but we just didn't perform with the bat. It's a great wicket and I believe if we bat as well as I know we can, we can beat Australia. "This was just one game where we've not performed to our best, but we will train hard and come back fighting on Friday." The series concludes at the Waca on Sunday, after which there are five Twenty20 internationals and a one-off Ashes Test.
