Womens Cricketer Isha Guha wins BASA honour

Guha helped England to a 2009 Women's World Cup win

England women's cricketer Isa Guha has won the prestigious sports personality of the year honour at the British Asian Sports Awards (BASA).

Guha help England win the ICC Women's World Cup in 2009 and she told BBC Asian Network: "It's a bit of a shock.

"I've been nominated three times and this is the first time I've won. This sort of recognition is incredible."

Boxer Amir Khan won the champagne moment of the year for his WBA light-welterweight title win in July 2009.

"It's a brilliant year for me, it's just getting better and better," said Khan.

"I want to thank my fans, thank god and my mother and father. Without them, I don't think I would have done this.

Ranatunga won the Lifetime Achievement award

"These awards are a platform for the young generation in the Asian community.

"I can see in the next four or five years that you'll see Olympic champions, just like myself, in the Asian community."

The BASA's were hosted by Nitin Ganatra, who plays Masood Ahmed in BBC1 soap opera Eastenders, and his wife in the show, actress Nina Wadia, also attended.

Coach of the Year - Sivakumar Renganathan - (taekwondo)
Overseas Sports Personality of the Year - Saina Nehwal (badminton)
