England's women thrashed Australia by nine wickets in the first one-day international at Chelmsford. Stand-in skipper Nicky Shaw's side dismissed Australia for 133 and knocked off the runs with 23 overs to spare. Sarah Taylor, who took three catches and pulled off one stumping, top scored for England with 68 off 74 balls, while Caroline Atkins finished 48 not out. Earlier spinner Holly Colvin took three wickets as Australia slumped to 57-7 before mounting a slight recovery. England had gone into the game without ill captain Charlotte Edwards but it had no effect on the team's performance. Australia won the toss and elected to bat but the result was their heaviest defeat in a one-day international against England. The home side dominated from the moment Shelley Nitschke fell off the opening ball of the innings, caught by Atkins off impressive seamer Katherine Brunt (2-22). Skipper Jodie Fields was the only Australian in the top seven to reach double figures - and afterwards she said: "Hopefully we will come back with a positive attitude and put a few more runs on the board in the next game."  | 606: DEBATE |
Rene Farrell top-scored for the Australians, with an undefeated 39 off 100 deliveries, as the visiting team came within two balls of batting out their overs. Spinner Holly Colvin took 3-27, while acting captain Shaw was miserly with 1-18 from her 10 overs. England, however, wasted no time with their reply as Taylor and Atkins set about the victory target. The opening duo got within 15 runs of a 10-wicket victory before Taylor, who notched her seventh career one-day international 50, top-edged an attempted sweep and was caught by Fields. "I am not as consistent as I would like to be but hopefully that will be the start," said Taylor of her player of the match performance. The victory gives England a 1-0 lead in the five-game ODI series, with the second match taking place at Chelmsford on Tuesday.
