Sarah Taylor - a century in one-dayers at the tender age of 17 |
Coach Richard Bates believes Sussex and England's Sarah Taylor has the ability to become one of the best batters in international women's cricket. The 17-year-old hit her maiden century against Australia during the Quadrangular Series in India, which ended on Monday.
"In terms of natural talent, she is the best I have ever seen.
"She has a natural gift of hitting the ball hard and cleanly with seemingly minimal effort," said Bates.
Taylor's batting was undoubtedly the biggest plus for England in a tournament in which they underperformed, losing all six group games before finally beating hosts India in the third and fourth place play-off match.
But Bates warned: "A player can have an abundance of natural talent, but that talent doesn't translate itself into world-class performances.
"This is the start of a long journey for Sarah and it will be how she applies her talent in different situations and conditions that will determine whether she fulfils her undoubted potential."
He added: "In the long-term, I see her establishing herself at the top of the order in ODI cricket. Through circumstances she has been elevated to open in this tournament and has immediately made an impression.
"She will be keen not to give that spot up in a hurry, and provided she keeps her feet firmly on the ground and works hard in all areas, I don't see any reason why that should happen."
Taylor's next major challenge will be a home series against New Zealand in August, featuring six one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches.
