Lancashire opening bat Laura Newton has been named as vice-captain of the England women's team through to 2009 World Cup in Australia. Newton, a qualified coach, made her international debut in a one-day game against South Africa in 1997 and is the only mother in the England team.
She will now act as deputy for new skipper Charlotte Edwards.
"Having worked with her in the past I am confident it will be a great partnership," Edwards commented.
Coach Richard Bates explained the reasoning behind the long-term appointment, saying: "As we look forward to the World Cup in 2009 it is important we have some continuity between now and then.
"Laura has the right character and qualities needed to compliment Charlotte and they will provide the leadership to take us forward."
Newton was a key figure in the Ashes-winning team of last summer, and scored two half centuries in a victorious one-day campaign in Sri Lanka which followed over the winter.
"I aim to provide the backing the team requires in any way I can and I'm really pleased to know that I'll be involved in the international set-up between now and the next World Cup," she said.
