Semis so close after Indian lesson

England cricketer at the Women's World Cup

We only needed one run to win, but I got it in the middle of the bat and it flew for six

It is still mathematically possible for us to miss out on the Women's World Cup semi-finals, but we can put that right against New Zealand on Friday.

There are some big group games to be played which will determine the final four, and this is one of them.

As we showed against the White Ferns last summer, we are fully capable of beating them.

They have been bowling well and are coming off a big win against India, but we are fresh from a confidence-boosting victory as well.

It was a good to bounce back to winning form against South Africa after a disappointing loss to the Indians.

You can learn from winning matches, but you get introspective after a loss and there were lessons to be learnt.

We were taught a lesson on how to bat against an attack like theirs on a pitch that was very slow and didn't give you value for your shots.

Fours were hard to come by even if you pierced the field, and the quality of their bowling meant it was hard for us to go over the top for runs.

Our coach Richard Bates called it a blip, and I wouldn't mind facing India again in the semis at Potchefstroom on a completely different, faster wicket.

England celebrate a wicket
The defeat of South Africa was vital for us to get back on track

But even if there were reasons for the defeat, we were outplayed and deserved to lose.

So when we faced South Africa two days later it was important to return to the kind of cricket we know we can play and get back on track for the semis.

We had batted first in every game up to that point, so when we won the toss we challenged them to set a total.

We were happy to chase 175, and Charlotte Edwards and I took it easy early on before really going for it and winning the bonus point.

Charlotte needed a runner for half her innings but it didn't stop her scoring freely after passing fifty, and it was a shame she fell one run short of another century.

We needed to score just one run from the last two balls of the 40th over to get the extra point and I was lucky enough to hit the winnings runs.

We have rehearsed for this exact situation in training, and the plan is for the striker to open the shoulders and hit down the ground.

If you are caught then at least the batters have crossed and the incoming batter won't have to face the last ball, but as it happened I got it in the middle of the bat and it flew for six!

It also gave me my half-century, and I couldn't be happier with my form.

I'm relaxing at the crease, not trying to hit the ball too hard or prove anything. I'm just trying to get involved in the matches and take responsibility.

I'm confident in my own ability to do the job, but I'm also confident in the ability of those around me. Apart from the India match, we have been in great form with the bat.

We haven't had much time to get out and about in South Africa with a match every other day.

But we have managed to fit in normal girly things like shopping, and a few of us relieved one store of a fair amount of their sale merchandise the other day. Clare Connor and Charlotte did particularly well!

We have also arranged a couple of quiz nights, a swimming gala and a themed evening for the end of our trip.

The girls split into three groups for the contests, and I can report that the Lip Gloss Glamour Girls were too clever for the PG Tips and the Blockbuster Babes in the first quiz night.

The Lip Gloss Glamour Girls, led by Clare, drew 2-2 in the pool with my group, the PG Tips, and have challenged us to a rematch if we get to 'Potch' for the semis.

It's good clean fun to keep our minds fresh for the task at hand - winning the World Cup.
