Australia gained revenge for the last Women's World Cup final with a 32-run first round defeat of New Zealand. Karen Rolton took 3-22 to bowl the holders out for 142, despite Rebecca Rolls' 60, chasing 175 for victory.
Ireland were dealt a heavy nine-wicket defeat by India as they were bowled out for just 65 at the Technicon Oval.
West Indies put up more of a fight but were bowled out one run short by hosts South Africa after Cri-Zelda Brits followed her 72 with 4-36.
Philippa Thomas starred for West Indies with the ball, taking 4-35, and kept her side in the chase batting at number 10.
But with three balls left, and just two runs needed, she edged with a slog sweep to leave the hosts relieved.
Australia's win was more difficult than it looked, as they stumbled to 50-5 before Alex Blackwell and Cathryn Fitzpatrick shared a partnership of 85.
New Zealand were in trouble at 23-3, but a fourth-wicket stand of 77 between Rebecca Rolls and Haidee Tiffin put on 77 swung the balance back before Rolton struck.
Miriam Grealey, in her fourth World Cup, provided Ireland with over half their runs in a battling 38 but was short of partners.
Mithali Raj and Anju Jain guided India home within 18 overs.
