Waugh 'caretaker' for Ponting
Steve Waugh
Waugh passed Bradman's record of 29 Test tons

Steve Waugh believes it is only a matter of time before Ricky Ponting breaks his new Australian record for Test centuries.

Waugh, in his record 159th Test, hit 115 on the second day in Bridgetown, passing Sir Donald Bradman's mark of 29 tons.

"I think this is a record that I won't have for long. The way Ricky Ponting is going, he should get past this. I am sure that he will take over one day. I am just a caretaker," said Waugh.

Ponting, already Australia's one-day captain and Waugh's expected successor, scored 113 on Thursday - his 17th century in his 67th Test.

"Personally it's nice to get the hundred. It's a great honour to pass Sir Donald Bradman's record," Waugh went on, before putting the achievement in perspective.

"It's something special for me but I have played 107 more Test matches."

Waugh was low-key about passing Sunil Gavaskar's total of 10,122 runs to move second in the list of Test run-scorers, behind predecessor Allan Border's 11,174.

But he was critical of the quality of wickets throughout the series, which has hit the tourists' hopes of completing the first whitewash in the Caribbean.

The Kensington Oval has seen 694 runs scored in two days and only nine wickets taken.

"Usually, when you come to the West Indies, balls are flying around your ears and the crowd are getting excited," he said.

"This time, it's low, flat and slow and it's difficult for the crowd to get involved in the game."

"We heard it was going to be pacy and bouncy but I've played 159 Tests and this is the slowest pitch I've ever played on."
