The Test Match Special team gather in the TMS box at Lord's for the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies In May 1957 the first day of the Test between England and West Indies at Edgbaston is broadcast in its entirety with Rex Alston, John Arlott, EW Swanton and Ken Ablack at the mic As the voice of cricket on BBC Radio, Arlott's distinctive Hampshire burr was familiar to fans from 1946 until he finally retired at the centenary Test match at Lord's in 1980 Brian Johnston transferred his commentary skills from television to the TMS team in 1970 and he soon became one of the best-loved voices on radio Former England fast bowler Fred Trueman provided expert views for Test Match Special from 1974 to 1999 - providing numerous observations on the modern game and its players The TMS team could initially be heard on BBC Radio 3 before moving to Radio 4 long wave - it has now entered the digital age and is broadcast on Five Live Sports Extra too Trevor Bailey was also able to transfer his cricketing knowledge from the pitch to the commentary box and was given the nickname "Boil" by Johnston TMS statistician Bill Frindall, "the Bearded Wonder", took over the job in the summer of 1966 following the death of previous scorer Arthur Wrigley A fresh face is added to the team in 1990 with the appointment of a new BBC cricket correspondent, Jonathan Agnew, who moves into the role from the first-class game During England's 2001 Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, Agnew is forced to commentate from the fort ramparts after the BBC is kept out of the ground for contractual reasons Henry Blofeld started with the team in the early 1970s and after a spell away from the BBC in the early nineties he returned in 1994 to the delight of his many fans Peter Baxter has been involved for 40 of the 50 years and has produced the show since 1973 - he will retire after England's 2007 Test series against the West Indies Former BBC cricket correspondent Christopher Martin-Jenkins is another long-serving member of the team and can still be heard alongside Geoff Boycott who rejoined the team in 2005
