Matthew Hayden has been fined 20% of his match fee and Adam Gilchrist severely reprimanded after both were found guilty of code of conduct offences in the fifth Test.

Hayden admitted at an International Cricket Council hearing to breaking a window pane in the Australia dressing room on the fourth day in Sydney.

The opening batsman was given out to a debatable lbw decision as Australia made a disastrous start to their huge second-innings run-chase at the SCG.

Hayden was charged with a Level 1 offence, which sites as punishable: "Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings."

In not imposing a maximum fine of 50% of a player's fee, match referee Wasim Raja said: "At the hearing Matthew Hayden admitted the offence and apologised for his action.

"Allowing for Matthew's previously clean record I decided the appropriate punishment is a severe reprimand and a fine of 20% of his match fee."

Escaped

Gilchrist escaped a fine after being found guilty of showing dissent following an unsuccessful appeal for the wicket of Steve Harmison.

"At the hearing Adam Gilchrist admitted swearing and expressed regret at doing so," Wasim said.

"I decided the punishment should be a serious official reprimand and a warning as to his future conduct."

It is the second time this series that the code of conduct has been breached.

Gillespie is out of Thursday's VB Series game

In the fourth Test, England fast bowler Andy Caddick received a reprimand after gesturing obscenely to the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Meanwhile, Jason Gillespie will miss Australia's VB Series game against Sri Lanka on Thursday after injuring his left elbow in Sydney.

The fast bowler fell awkwardly after slipping on his follow-through on day four, forcing him to leave the field.

Australia coach John Buchanan said x-rays had cleared Gillespie of any breaks but there was some ligament damage.

Despite the injury, Gillespie, who made 31 not out in the first innings, will be available to bat on Monday if needed.

"He's getting a final assessment tomorrow and will be available to bat if required," Buchanan said.

Gillespie's injury is another blow to Australia, who are already missing star bowlers Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
