Sri Lanka miss the point
News image

England finally achieved their first win of this tour, but the gloss was taken off the accomplishment by an extraordinarily lacklustre batting display by the Sri Lankans.

They did not seem the least bit interested in chasing their target of 293.

But there is no need to start calling in Lord Condon and his anti-corruption unit.

The reason for Sri Lanka's approach was the most recent curse to be introduced to the one-day game by meddling administrators - namely the bonus point.

England fans
England fans cheered, but was it good viewing?

Whoever thought up this short-sighted, ludicrous concept should be forced to watch the full, unabridged videotape of Sri Lanka's innings for a full month.

Why on earth should a losing team be rewarded with anything?

In this case, Sri Lanka realised early in the piece that they could not reach 293, but the 233 they needed for a point was more accessible.

This they managed in the penultimate over of the match so, for at least an hour and a half, the crowd was forced to watch a no contest.

So while the inert proceedings should ensure that no more one-day tournaments are ever blighted with bonus points for losers, it was a shame for England.

Thankful

The players shook hands as the few spectators that remained dashed for the exits thankful, no doubt, that here in Queensland the scheduled end is 9pm rather than the 10pm of everywhere else.

At least there were a number of plus points to reflect on for a change.

England's mood was far more upbeat than it has at any other time on the tour - not surprising since the only Australian on the field was Umpire Hair!

Nasser Hussain and James Anderson
Anderson pleased his captain with a fine display

Jimmy Anderson took the new ball and produced some rapid deliveries in his opening spell, while Steve Harmison used the hard pitch to great effect when he took over in his first one-day international.

Andy Caddick looked a new man as he charged in at Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana rather than Hayden and Gilchrist.

We all hope he will produce a similarly aggressive display in Melbourne during the fourth Test.

England's fielding was also far slicker than has been the case with a spectacular catch by Collingwood being the highlight.

However, one-day cricket is all about entertainment.

Kill that, and you kill the game. We must all ensure that this dreadful spectacle is never allowed to be repeated.
