| Warne expects World Cup return ![]() Warne faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines Australia's Shane Warne is targeting the World Cup for a return to cricket after surgery on his dislocated right shoulder. An arthroscopy revealed that the leg-spinner damaged ligaments and cartilage, but he suffered no serious structural damage in a fielding accident during Sunday's 89-run win over England. "All I know is I'm going to give it my best shot to try and get it right as quick as I can," Warne said. "Hopefully that'll give me enough time for the World Cup. If it's not then so be it."
He will be buoyed by a rules clarification from the International Cricket Council, issued on Monday. Teams will be able to replace injured players during the World Cup, even if the problem pre-dates the start of the tournament on 9 February. "I've been on a fitness campaign the last 12 months and been as fit as I've ever been, and bowling probably better than I ever have," Warne went on. "After all the injuries that I've had - the shoulder, the finger - it's pretty disappointing to have what happened to me the other night. "But I think I've shown a fair bit of courage, and that's something I'll have to face now." Warne had a reconstruction on the same shoulder in 1998 but, after a lay-off of several months, forced his way back into the Australian line-up during the World Cup-winning campaign in 1999. But he said he would not rush back into the game if there was a risk of long-term damage. "If I come back too soon and I am not 100%, that won't do anyone any good." "If I have learnt anything from my past injuries, it is to not come back too early. I am going to make sure I am right." |
