Confidence not an issue
News image

The selectors think I have lost some confidence but that just isn't true.

Of course it's taken a little bit of a beating over here but that wouldn't apply to just me.

I admit I haven't picked up the wickets I would have liked, but all of our bowlers have been struggling.

I've told the selectors that my confidence is up but unfortunately they overlooked me for the Perth Test and that really disappointed me.

I got the vibes that I wasn't going to be playing beforehand so I certainly prepared for it.

And then when Caddy wasn't fit I thought I was back in with a chance, but the selectors decided to go in with a completely new attack.

Matthew Hoggard and adoring fans
Signing autographs was the extent of my impact in Perth

After the first two Tests something had to give and unfortunately it was me.

Nasser broke the bad news to me on the morning of the game.

He said that I was unlucky and that I'd tried my heart out but I was having a rest.

I'm fairly honest and I rate my performances according to how I see them.

If it's bad I'll tell selectors instead of making out it was good, so in that sense I'm my own worst enemy.

It's always disappointing when you lose your place but it has made me more determined to get back in the side.

Pressure situation

I'm bitterly disappointed to not be picked for the one-day squad.

Again it goes back to confidence. They just want me to go away and get back into form away from the pressure situation of one-day cricket.

Because you can bowl six legitimately good balls in the limited-overs game and they can disappear to six different parts of the ground.

So from the selectors' perspective, they just want me to get my confidence up and get back into bowling well without the pressure of batters at the other end.

I've been told that I am in with a good shout after Christmas, so it will be interesting to see how they view my situation then.

I'm just going to work hard in the three weeks I've got off and try hard to get back into the team for the Boxing Day Test.

The World Cup is still some way off but I'll need to get back into the one-day squad after Christmas to have a chance for that.

I'm sure the group they pick for the second half of the VB Series is the one they'll take to South Africa so if I'm not in that then I don't think I'll be on the plane.

I hope my experience in South Africa will stand me in good stead but it will all depend on how others perform in the one-dayers and how I bowl in the lead-up to the Tests.

Time hasn't run out for me yet - and I'm determined to fight my way back into both sides.
