Window cleaner Thorp took four wickets

England's Ashes preparations had gone from bad to worse when they slumped to 48-4 in the two-day match.

The recognised batsmen failed to get to grips with rookie swing bowler Callum Thorp.

Thorp, a window cleaner from Perth, trapped Robert Key lbw for four, before dismissing Mark Butcher for seven and captain Nasser Hussain for just one run at the WACA ground.

Then moments later John Crawley returned to the pavilion with a duck as England.

Marcus Trecothick (46) and Alec Stewart (42) did show some form before fast bowler Paul Wilson ended Trescothick's time at the crease when he tempted him forward and he edged low to Mike Hussey at first slip.

Wilson ended with figures of 3-38 and Michael Clark, son of Yorkshire coach Wayne Clark, picked up two wickets for 42 runs.

Western Australia, missing eight first team regulars, had to face three overs before the close of play.

Mike Hussey and Chris Rogers ended the day on 3-0.

The depleted England side had been put into bat after losing the toss in their second Ashes tour match.

Captain Hussain, already without injured trio Michael Vaughan, Andrew Flintoff and Darren Gough also decided against risking Simon Jones.

Meanwhile, Craig White has been called into the squad as a temporary replacement for Flintoff.
