On the field, Headingley 1981 was the high point of a career in which he represented his country 102 times. Off it his personality made headlines on the front as well as the back pages.
But whatever his wrong-doing, Botham has always been forgiven by the public and press because of moments like Headingley 1981. From walking off at Lords for a duck and losing his job as the national captain, Botham bounced back in sensational style. His innings of 149 was recently voted the greatest moment in the history of British sport and "100% Beefy" provides an opportunity to recall the drama of the series dubbed Botham's Ashes and the colourful life of a quintessential English hell-raiser. Back to front "Over the course of a couple of July days the order of the universe was set on its head. "Last became first, every valley was exalted, and the stars stopped in their courses to cheer." Is sport really that significant? In the second of a three part series on sporting news stories that have displaced more typical front-page news, Simon Barnes reflects on Headingley 1981.
Their feat, and England's comeback, were front page news in the Times. Dilley reflects on the Test as the greatest achievement the team ever achieved, but to others, the fact that a cricket match carried so much significance is deemed ridiculous. |
