A spin bowling all-rounder, who was educated at Oxford University, Vic was a member of the powerful Somerset side which won five trophies between 1979 and 1983. He captained the county in his final two seasons before retiring in 1989.
On leaving the game Vic become cricket correspondent of the Observer newspaper, a position he still holds.
He played six Tests for England and 34 one-day internationals, taking five for 39 against Sri Lanka during the 1983 World Cup.
And he made his mark with TMS while still a player.
Vic was idle in the dressing room during the 1984-85 tour in India when TMS lost its last summariser, Delhi Belly sending Mike Selvey scuttling back to the hotel.
Vic stepped in and a broadcasting career - punctuated by the familiar chuckle - was born.
