![]() | Hooper leads Windies fightback ![]() Hooper has scored 556 runs in five innings in the series Fourth Test, St John's, Antigua, day four: India 1st innings 513-9 declared; West Indies 1st innings 405-5 (at stumps)
Carl Hooper's fine form continued as the West Indies captain blasted his third century of the series against India on Monday. The home side reached 405-5 at the close of the fourth day of the fourth Test in Antigua in reply to India's first innings total of 513-9 declared. Hooper smashed 136 in a partnership of 186 with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (80 not out) as the West Indies took advantage of weak Indian bowling at the Recreation Ground.
Home captain Hooper shrugged off the early loss of overnight partner Ramnaresh Sarwan to score freely off an Indian attack weakened by the absence of leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who is flying home for surgery on his broken jaw. Hooper's hundred came off 215 balls and included 10 fours and three sixes as Chanderpaul reached his half-century off 158 balls. The in-form pair have already made two centuries each in the series and had put on 70 for the fifth wicket by lunch - 48 runs short of the follow-on - and extended that stand to 144 by tea. Hooper eventually fell to a catch by Ashish Nehra off the bowling of spinner Sachin Tendulkar after facing 278 balls. Wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs (18 not out) came in to see the West Indies through to the close. Early success Faced with the task of taking 17 West Indies wickets in the final two days to go 2-1 up in the series, India could not afford to let Hooper and Sarwan settle at the start of play. Sarwan had a lucky escape in Tendulkar's opening over when the ball bounced towards the stumps via pad and gloves, but he managed to kick it away. He was not so fortunate when he played down the wrong line to a ball from left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan and was given out lbw for 51. Hooper, who was 26 not out overnight, began by chopping a low full toss from Zaheer to the third man fence, and then repeated the dose with a fine cut from a rising delivery. He got away with a false shot when he mis-hooked a short ball from Zaheer, but it fell to earth safely and thereafter looked in superb touch. Javagal Srinath and Nehra took the second new ball, but only the occasional delivery sneaked past the outside edge. Kumble was badly missed but management decided it was fruitless to delay his return home despite his heroics in claiming the wicket of Brian Lara on Sunday. India won the second Test in Trinidad by 37 runs but West Indies hit back with a 10-wicket win in Barbados. The fifth and final Test begins on 18 May at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
