Sports Talk: Will Windies square it?

India slipped closer to an innings defeat in Bridgetown as they lost three quick wickets after a promising start.

Wasim Jaffer and Shiv Sundar Das for the first time in the series provided India with a good opening partnership in their second innings after the tourists were faced with a 292-run deficit.

But with the score 80 without loss and the West Indies pacemen wondering how they could force a breakthrough, Das fatally called Jaffer through for a quick single.

It was an unnecessary move, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, sprinting in from point, threw down the stumps with Jaffer out for 51 by a margin of inches.

Das and the in-form Rahul Dravid took the tourists to 100 without further loss before three further wickets fell for just 17 runs.

Merv Dillon took two of those, having Das caught by Ramnaresh Sarwan for 35 and trapping Sachin Tendulkar lbw for eight.

In between, Dravid was caught by Ridley Jacobs off the bowling of Adam Sanford for 14.

At the close, captain Saurav Ganguly was at the crease on 15, with Vangipurappu Laxman on 30.

But with no more recognised batsmen to follow, making the 123 runs still required to avoid an innings defeat will be a tall order on a lively pitch.

Commanding

West Indies secured their commanding position earlier in the day as Chanderpaul and skipper Carl Hooper made their second centuries of the series.

They put on 205 for the fifth wicket before Hooper's dismissal for 115, caught by Sachin Tendulkar at mid-off when mis-hitting a pull off Harbhajan Singh, gave renewed life to India's bowling attack.

Left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra nipped out Jacobs and Dillon and the home side's last four wickets went down for just four runs.

Chanderpaul batted for almost four hours for his 101 but finally ran out of partners just before tea when Cameron Cuffy was run out.

Nehra ended up with four wickets, while off-spinner Harbhajan took three, including tail-enders Pedro Collins and Adam Sanford for ducks.
