West Indies fast bowler Merv Dillon is confident they will square the series at the Kensington Oval after dismissing India cheaply on the opening day.

The tourists were on the back foot from the first ball of the game as Dillon bowled Shiv Sunder Das for nought.

He finished with four for 41 and was well supported by Adam Sanford, who picked up three wickets.

"It's the first time I've got a wicket with the first ball in Tests. Things just went on from there. Coming here one down, it was exactly the start we wanted," said Dillon.

"We were focussed. We played with four seamers and wanted to get a shot at them early. Knowing the Barbados wicket, we knew it would help the quicks.

"There was quite a bit of pace and bounce in it and I think we bowled quite well."

Despite India's problems, Dillon believes the West Indies batsmen are capable of coping with the pitch and building a commanding first innings lead.

"The wicket, if you get set, is still a very good batting wicket. I'm sure we'll do well and post a big total and go on and win the match."

Dillon has still only taken five wickets in an innings once in 24 Tests but is now firmly established as their senior strike bowler following the retirement of Courtney Walsh.

"I'm not too worried about not getting five wickets today. It's always good to get five, but hopefully I'll get it once before the series is over - maybe twice.

"The main goal for me is to help West Indies win the series."
