![]() | Lara leads Windies charge ![]() Lara hit just four boundaries in his unbeaten 40 Second Test, Port of Spain, day four: India 339 & 218-9; West Indies 245 and 131-2 West Indies require 313 to win
Brian Lara made an unbeaten 40 as West Indies, needing 313 for victory in the second Tests against India, began their run-chase in positive fashion. Lara, known for his aggressive batting style, struck only four fours to put West Indies on top before bad light ended play 19 overs ahead of schedule.
Captain Carl Hooper was keeping Lara company on one after Stuart Williams and Ramnaresh Sarwan had been dismissed while Chris Gayle had retired hurt. Williams was caught at first slip by Rahul Dravid for 13 off Javagal Srinath before Dravid snapped up Sarwan off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. Gayle, who had left the field on Saturday with a knee injury, had to retire hurt on 21 due to severe cramps in his left wrist. Earlier, the West Indies grabbed six wickets for 13 runs as India's second innings ended on 218 despite a fighting 75 not out by captain Saurav Ganguly. Ganguly shared a 149-run stand for the fifth wicket with Vangipurappu Laxman (74) before India collapsed on a slowing wicket.
Laxman's dismissal sparked a dramatic lower-order collapse as Ganguly quickly ran out of partners. Wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra was trapped lbw for two to a delivery from Cameron Cuffy. And Harbhajan was dismissed next ball, edging a Cuffy outswinger straight to Gayle at first slip. Srinath was out for two in the next over, steering Dillon to third slip where Williams took a brilliant two-handed catch diving to his right.
Khan was run out after a misunderstanding with Ganguly over a sharp single to mid-off and Nehra was bowled for a first-ball duck by Dillon, who finished with four wickets for 42. Ganguly had earlier raised his 50 by glancing Adam Sanford to the fine-leg fence for four before rain held up play for 35 minutes. India are seeking their first Test win in the Caribbean since the 1975-76 season while West Indies are looking to bounce back from two straight Test series losses. |
