West Indies were struggling on 197 for six at close of play on the second day of the second Test against India in Port of Spain, despite a half-century from Brian Lara.

Responding to India's first innings 339, Lara struggled initially to come to terms with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

But the 32-year-old recovered, cracking some excuisite shots through the off-side, as he shared in a 56-run stand for the second wicket with Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Sarwan scored 35 to help West Indies recover from 80 for two.

Middle-order collapse

Lara brought up his 50 off 74 balls steering paceman Javagal Srinath through a vacant third-man for his sixth boundary.

But he fell soon after for 52, fishing outside off to an outswinger from left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan, giving debutant wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra his first test catch.

Captain Carl Hooper, who had smashed 233 for his maiden test double-century in the Bourda test, was batting on a patient 30 at the close with Mervyn Dillon for company.

Lara's dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse with Srinath removing Chanderpaul for one and Junior Murray for nought.

Fast bowlers Marlon Black and Adam Sanford had earlier taken their tallies to three wickets apiece.

Four boundaries

India had restarted on 262 for four and were bundled out in the second over after lunch despite a fighting 69 not out by Vangipurappu Laxman.

The West Indian pacemen grabbed the last six Indian wickets for just 67 runs.

Sachin Tendulkar had started the morning on 113, but was trapped lbw by Cameron Cuffy after adding only four more runs.

West Indies got off to a good start when opener Stuart Williams, who started on 43, his four boundaries off Srinath.

But a change of ends proved fruitful for Srinath, who had left-hander Chris Gayle caught behind for 13 after getting a leading edge to a good-length delivery to make it 50 for one.

Controversial lbw

Harbhajan beat Williams in the air and had him caught by Das at forward short-leg as the batsman tried to flick him to leg.

Sarwan drove Nehra straight down the ground for four but was out later in the same over, edging to Rahul Dravid at first slip.

Chanderpaul was out to a controversial lbw.

After Tendulkar's dismissal, the Indian wickets tumbled, leaving Laxman to fight on his own.

After he brought up his 50 off 106 balls, he was joined by Javagal Srinath, who chipped in with 18 runs are they added 41 for the ninth wicket.

But pace bowler Marlon Black, taken to hospital on Saturday with severe dehydration, trapped Srinath lbw in his first over after lunch and removed last-man Nehra for a duck.
