![]() | India still favourites ![]() Farokh Engineer still thinks India can win the series in the Caribbean despite spending much of the first Test on the back foot. My prediction for the first Test went slightly wrong. India dropped some crucial catches - and you can't afford to do that. But if I was a betting man, which I'm not, I would still put some money on India to win the series. It was a moral victory for the West Indies, no doubt about it, but whether it's out of sheer loyalty or blind faith I think my team can come good now. Anil Kumble was not all that effective in Guyana. Once you work out how to play him he's not that effective on a flat track.
He bowls a tremendous line and length, slanting the ball into the right-handers. But if you play him inside out, as a batsman you can have some joy against him. Sarandeep Singh did not bowl enough, and I don't know what was going through Sourav Ganguly's mind. He bowled less than Sanjay Bangar, for example. Of course, with Harbhajan Singh expected to be fit for Trinidad, Sarandeep will probably not play at Port-of-Spain. With the new ball, Srinath bowled beautifully - he's one of the best around. As for India's batting, Tendulkar initially rescued them after a poor start, and Rahul Dravid then settled in to score a century. He's got a good reach and gets straight to the pitch of the ball, but for someone who has such a good average he should really have scored more centuries in his career, I think.
I mentioned Sanjay Bangar last time. He shows a lot of class in some of his innings and in others is too impatient. I am hoping he's saving himself for Trinidad. West Indies pitches are not too dissimilar these days to the ones in India. They say the pitch at Port-of-Spain has a bit of grass on it, but it will be very dry underneath and the ball will turn. In fact, Trinidad is always known to be a turner - all the great spinners have always bowled there. My view is that Harbhajan and Kumble will have to bowl well in harness in the latter part of the match. I have to say that I was impressed with the West Indies in Guyana. Sir Garfield Sobers did a really good job in the few days he had with the team. I would dearly love to help the Indian players when they come here! I have got a bit of experience in these conditions, after all, after playing county cricket at Lancashire. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top West Indies v India stories: Links to more West Indies v India stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
