| Australia collect second win Jimmy Maher's 95 was crucial for the Aussies Second one-day international, Centurion Park, Australia 226-8 (50 overs) beat South Africa 181 all out (46.2 overs) by 45 runs Australia took a 2-0 series lead after another dismal batting performance from South Africa cost the home side the match. Although they again restricted the Australians to an eminently manageable total, South Africa ruined everything by misfiring completely at the start of their run chase. And, in a carbon copy of Friday's match, by the time Lance Klusener produced his usual fireworks, there simply wasn't enough time left for his efforts to count. Herschelle Gibbs fell in the fifth over, caught as he dimly tried to pull a length ball from Glenn McGrath. Gary Kirsten was in skittish mood, but soon followed his partner back to the pavilion when Jason Gillespie had him caught at a widish slip for 21.
Jacques Kallis was brilliantly caught by skipper Ricky Ponting in the unusual position of short cover point off McGrath. And when Gillespie won a slightly fortuitous lbw against Jonty Rhodes, South Africa had slumped to 45-4. Two brilliant run outs effected by Ponting, plus the dismissal of Mark Boucher - clean bowled sweeping Nathan Hauritz - saw the position worsen to 110-7. Klusener swung cleanly to collect four sixes in a quick-fire 59. But even before he was out to the cunning left-arm spin of Darren Lehmann, the game was more or less up. Gillespie finished with four wickets. Maher the magnificent Earlier, Jimmy Maher celebrated his first appearance for his country in four years with a magnificent innings of 95. Maher helped a new-look Australia side make light of the double failure of captain Ponting and vice-captain Adam Gilchrist. But he ultimately fell five short of a century looking to force the pace in the 46th over.
Pollock had won the toss and asked Australia to bat - and there was some sideways movement early on. A stand of 85 for the second wicket between Maher and Matty Hayden got the tourists going after the early loss of Gilchrist. When Ponting was brilliantly caught and bowled first ball by Boje, Australia were 99-3 and not really scoring fast enough. But any chink of daylight for the home side was removed with a 97-run stand between Maher and the fast-scoring Damien Martyn. Pollock equalled Gillespie's efforts by taking four wickets for the home side.
