Australia dominate day one
Matthew Hayden sweeps
Hayden hit his fourth Test century against South Africa
First Test, Johannesburg, day one (stumps): Australia 331-5 v South Africa

Matthew Hayden hit his fourth century in successive matches as Australia dominated South Africa on day one of the first Test at the Wanderers.

Even though the left-hander was finally dismissed for 122, South Africa's bid to avenge a 3-0 series defeat in Australia already looked troubled.

And a side already missing opening bowler Shaun Pollock looked in even deeper trouble when veteran Allan Donald fell to the ground clutching his hamstring five overs from the close.

At stumps, the tourists were 331 for five, with Adam Gilchrist in ominous form on 25 and Damien Martyn 21 not out.

Hayden was lucky to survive an edge into the slips in the second over, when he was dropped by Jacques Kallis before getting off the mark.

But he made the most of his second life, hitting 18 boundaries and hitting spinner Nicky Boje for two sixes in an innings lasting 189 deliveries.

Controversial

After losing opening partner Justin Langer, lbw to Donald early on, the left-hander joined Ricky Ponting to put on a quick-fire 67 in 12 overs during the morning

Australia's new one-day captain was given out off the bowling of Andre Nel for 39.

Mark Waugh

And television replays casting considerable doubt on the edge, taken by stand-in captain Mark Boucher.

But Hayden was undeterred and joined Mark Waugh in taking just 144 deliveries to put on 100 for the third wicket.

Waugh was unconvincing, though, especially against the short ball, and was dismissed for 53, gloving Makhaya Ntini down the leg side.

Hayden became increasingly reckless after reaching three figures and was caught behind by wicket-keeper Boucher, attempting to hook a Nel bouncer.

South Africa's pace bowlers then made up for a wayward first two sessions by slowing the pace of Steve Waugh and Martyn.

The Australia captain also looked below par, grinding 32 runs from 98 deliveries before cutting Jacques Kallis to backward point.

Opening the bowling in Pollock's absence, Ntini was the pick of the bowlers, although his consistency was wanting early on.

He finished the day with figures of one for 62. Nel took two for 64.

Injury troubles

Western Province batsman Ashwell Prince was handed his first Test cap by South Africa at the beginning of the day.

The 24-year-old, who made 92 for South Africa A against the tourists, was preferred to Graeme Smith as cover for the injured Justin Ontong, and is likely to bat at six.

Boucher skippered South Africa for the first time in his 50th Test appearance because of Pollock's side strain.

A further casualty was Gary Kirsten, struck in the eye by a hook shot from Mark Waugh while fielding at short leg during the morning session.

But x-rays showed nothing more than a badly bruised cheekbone and swelling under the eye of the opening batsman.

South Africa: Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Neil McKenzie, Jacques Kallis, Boeta Dippenaar, Justin Ontong, Mark Boucher (captain), Andre Nel, Ashwell Prince, Nicky Boje, Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini.

Australia: Matthew Hayden, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh (captain), Damein Martyn, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath
