Waugh savours victory
Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist
The Australians go on a lap of honour
Steve Waugh hailed his team as "exceptional" after becoming the first Australian skipper to complete a clean sweep over South Africa since Bill Woodfull in 1931-32.

They completed a 3-0 whitewash with a 10-wicket victory in Sydney, and won with a day to spare for the second successive match.

"You'll look back in 10 years and say 'Not a bad side this one'," Waugh commented.

"We play aggressively, we try to play to win inside five days, we try to take the weather out of the equation and we try and only bat once.

"Those are the standards we're setting ourselves. We're not always going to achieve those, but we want to set the bar high and try to get to that standard."

Hayden hit the winning runs
Hugs all round: Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer

"It's been a great couple of weeks for the Australian team."

Waugh singled out opening batsman Matthew Hayden for special praise after the left-hander scored 429 runs in the series at an average of 107.25.

It also gave Hayden, the leading Test run-scorer in 2001, 726 runs during the Australian season, surpassing Greg Chappell's total of 702 in 1975-76.

"He's just in complete control of his game. His balance is magnificent, his shot execution is first-class and his temperament is really good.

"I can't imagine anyone playing better than him," said Waugh.

Australia's thoughts also turned to wider issues as they decided to donate their winnings to the appeal fund to help families affected by the bush fires which have devastated parts of New South Wales.

Earlier in the week, the players had each autographed 10 bats which will be auctioned off to raise more money.

"We have all been shocked by the devastation the fires have caused," Waugh added.
