Australia are well on course to complete a home whitewash of South Africa after a dominant performance with bat and ball on the second day of the third Test in Sydney.

South Africa finished the day struggling on 94 for 4 chasing Australia's massive first-innings total of 554.

Glenn McGrath and Stuart MacGill took two wickets apiece as the South African opening order crumbled under the Australian attack.

Opener Gary Kirsten went for 18 when edging a McGrath delivery to Ricky Ponting at third slip with the score on 37.

Boeta Dippenaar was clean bowled by McGrath for three, before Jacques Kallis went for four after edging Stuart MacGill to wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.

Finally, Herschelle Gibbs also got a nick off MacGill and was caught at first slip by Mark Waugh for 32.

Needing 354 to avoid the follow-on, Neil McKenzie was not out for 20 with Test debutant Justin Ontong on eight.

Australia had begun the day on 308-5, but added more than 200 before Damien Martyn became the last wicket to fall at tea.

Highest Sydney total

Martyn was dismissed for 117, his second century of the series and fourth overall.

Australia's total, after they began the day on 308-5, was their highest ever score against South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Martyn, who also scored an unbeaten 124 in the first Test, brought up his fourth Test hundred off 156 balls.

He began cautiously, scoring just 13 runs in the first hour of play.

But he suddenly upped the tempo, smashing 11 boundaries, including two reverse sweeps off left-arm spinner Claude Henderson.

Martyn shared a seventh-wicket stand of 83 off 80 balls with Shane Warne.

The leg spinner was eventually out for 37 when he dragged an attempted pull shot off onto his stumps off Shaun Pollock.

Adam Gilchrist was first man out on day two, caught by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher off the bowling of Jacques Kallis for 34.
